The Camino de Santiago from Ferrol, along the English Way, is another highly recommended option for families with children over the age of ten.
The English Way has two starting points; Ferrol and La Coruna. However, we can only get the Compostela by traveling on foot or on horseback one hundred kilometers and, by this route, we only overcome this distance from Ferrol. In total there are 7 stages of the Way.
The estimated time to complete this Camino route from this town to Santiago is at least seven or eight days . There are a total of 118 kilometers and it is important to plan according to the rhythm of our children, so that they enjoy the trip.
Why do the Camino de Santiago?
On the Camino, one can find two types of people: the “authentic” pilgrim or the “turigrino”, who are those who walk the Camino as a purely tourist experience, of alternative leisure. Generally, these do not usually finish the entire route since, after a few days, blisters, fatigue and lack of preparation make them leave battered.
The true pilgrim is the one who admires, helps and shares the walk with the others who accompany him, which moves them to continue to Santiago. They are those who have a compelling reason to make this sacrifice and who do it with the greatest humility and with all their heart.
It is essential to have a reason to make a pilgrimage and to want to do this journey as a family, however, doing it for leisure and fun is also a very lawful option and just as beautiful to do it, since the experience of the trip is unforgettable.
Pilgrim credentials for the Camino de Santiago from Ferrol
The first thing we must do is process the credential, which is the pilgrim’s passport. It can be obtained in a hostel without any problem. This document must be stamped at the different stages of the route, since it is an essential requirement to sleep in the houses and rural hostels along the way.
If your children have not made their first communion , in principle they will not be given the Compostela as such, but only a welcome document to Santiago.
The places in Ferrol to acquire this document are the Tourist Office of the Port, or also in the Co-Cathedral of San Xiao.
Plan the route of the Camino de Santiago
It is very important to calculate the daily sections that we are going to cover and locate the hostels to sleep in advance. We must take into account the ages of our children, to be able to take breaks when it is convenient and that it is always a pleasant family experience.
The Port of Curuxeiras is the starting point of the English Way, a place known for its small bars, where we can taste delicacies such as cocochas, cuttlefish, cuttlefish in sauce and battered or vinaigrette roe and, of course, the octopus á feira . All served in white cups, as is the tradition in Galicia.
